If the anti-corrosion coating is not done well, it will be troublesome in the later stage. Many construction sites and factories have encountered the problem of blistering, rusting, and peeling of the paint film shortly after spraying, which is time-consuming and time-consuming to rework, and also affects the project schedule and reputation.
Blistering of paint film: bulges, pinholes, presence of bubbles
Common causes
1. The substrate contains water/moisture
There is water vapor, dew on the surface of steel, concrete, and pipelines, or when the environmental humidity is too high, the water expands and lifts the paint film when heated.
2. The substrate has not been cleaned thoroughly
Oil stains, salt, and oxide scales are not completely removed, coating adhesion is poor, and air and water vapor are trapped under the film.
3. Spraying too thick/one-time thick coating
The surface dries quickly but dries slowly, and the internal solvent or air does not have time to evaporate, forming bubbles.
4. High temperature exposure construction
The substrate temperature is too high, the paint dries quickly, and air is trapped to form bubbles.
Emergency treatment
1. Small area blistering:
Use sandpaper to polish off the blistering area, confirm that there is no moisture, and then apply primer and topcoat.
2. Large scale blistering:
Thoroughly remove the blistering coating, re sand/polish for rust removal, and apply multiple thin coats according to specifications after drying.
Prevention key
·The substrate must be dry, oil-free, rust free, and dust-free
·Avoid construction on rainy days, high humidity, and direct sunlight
·Follow the principle of "thin coating with multiple passes" and avoid thick spraying at once
Paint film rusting: transparent rust, yellowing, rust spots oozing out
Common causes
1. Incomplete rust removal and perfunctory manual rust removal
Floating rust and residual oxide skin will continue to corrode and penetrate the paint film in the later stage.
2. Improper selection of primer
The epoxy zinc rich/anti rust primer should have been used, but ordinary anti rust paint or topcoat was used as the base, resulting in insufficient anti rust ability.
3. Damage and leakage of paint film
The spraying of corners, welds, and bolt positions is not in place or damaged, resulting in exposed substrate and direct contact of moisture with the substrate.
4. Acid alkali salt corrosive environment
Chemical, coastal, and sewage environments, corrosive media penetrate through paint films.
Emergency treatment
1. Slight rust spots:
Polish until a metallic luster is exposed, clean thoroughly, apply a special anti rust primer, and then cover the surface.
2. Large scale rusting:
Remove the overall rust to Sa2.5 level and redo the complete anti-corrosion system (primer+intermediate coat+topcoat).
Prevention key
·Strict rust removal standards, with emphasis on the treatment of welds and corners
·Heavy anti-corrosion environment must be matched with anti rust primer
·The paint film thickness meets the standard, with no missed spraying or thin coating
Paint film peeling: peeling, flaking, poor adhesion
Common causes
1. Serious substrate pollution
Oil stains, release agents, dust, and aged old paint have not been treated, and the coating cannot be hung.
2. Interlayer matching error
Spray the topcoat before the primer dries, or mix different system paints (such as epoxy+alkyd mixture).
3. Poor spraying environment
Low temperature and high humidity lead to poor curing of the paint film and extremely poor adhesion.
4. Severe powdering of old paint film
The renovation project did not remove the powdery layer by polishing, and the new paint was directly sprayed on the "loose surface".
Emergency treatment
1. Local detachment:
Remove loose coating, polish the surrounding interface, clean and reapply.
2. Large scale detachment:
Thoroughly remove all failed paint films, reprocess the surface, and complete the construction according to the process.
Prevention key
·Substrate processing is the first lifeline
·Strictly control the recoating interval and curing conditions
·Different paint systems cannot be mixed arbitrarily
Summary: Three parts of materials, seven parts of labor
90% of the problems with anti-corrosion coatings are not due to poor paint, but rather due to inadequate construction. The final lifespan is determined by each step of substrate treatment, construction environment, spraying thickness, and supporting system. Don't forcefully handle bubbles, don't delay rusting, and don't settle for detachment. The earlier the treatment, the lower the cost.
